Course Summary

This course is intended for counsellors who are looking to develop their CBT skills and theory further in order to incorporate this way of working effectively into their practice in an integrative way.

It is also designed to enhance the employability of counsellors in organisational settings and as independent practitioners by giving them a solid grounding in CBT skills and theory. CBT is one of the NICE recommended psychological therapies and counsellors with CBT skills are often favoured above those without in multidisciplinary psychological therapy teams especially the Talking Therapies/Increasing Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) NHS teams.

Topics Covered

This course will enable counsellors to:

» Enhance their understanding of Cognitive Behavioural theory and underpinning philosophy

» Build their knowledge of CBT related skills and interventions, with emphasis on how to incorporate these into integrative practice, i.e. blending with wider humanistic or psychodynamic influences.

» Gain insight into how to utilise CBT skills and theory to support specific areas of distress and presenting difficulties within their client work.

Key course outcomes include:

    1. Working safely, legally and ethically as a counsellor using the CBT approach
    2. Using the CBT framework to structure the therapeutic relationship
    3. Integrating understanding of diversity in CBT work
    4. Using a coherent CBT approach to respond to the needs of individual clients and their needs
    5. Working with self-awareness as a counsellor using the CBT approach
    6. Using CBT theory, research and techniques coherently within counselling work
    7. Monitoring and maintaining professional effectiveness as a counsellor using the CBT approach.
