Course Summary
This specialist tailor made CPCAB qualification, is designed to provide an opportunity for qualified counsellors to deepen their understanding and knowledge of working with trauma. The course explores key evidence based therapeutic approaches to working with a trauma focus, including providing students with a deeper understanding of the different types of trauma and competencies for working effectively. The course is based upon the 'Guidelines for Trauma Competencies' by the American Psychological Society, and 'Recommendations for Education and Training when working with Psychological Trauma' by the British Psychological Society.
Topics Covered
This course will enable counsellors to:
» Work towards meeting the requirements of ‘Column C’ within the Scope of Practice and Education (SCoPEd) framework for the counselling profession – i.e. ‘Accredited’ or 'Senior Accredited' level practice (depending on experience), often seen as a minimum entry point for employment and/or contract work in independent practice.
» Enhance knowledge and understanding of evidence informed therapeutic approaches to working with trauma and how to appropriately apply aspects of these approaches within an integrative framework.
» Develop confidence and insight into working with more complex aspects of clinical practice.

- Recognising PTSD, Complex PTSD, and developmental trauma
- Trauma theories from integrative, psychological, and cultural viewpoints
- Attachment, dissociation, memory, shame, and the body in trauma
- Trauma-informed assessment, case formulation, and treatment planning
- Creating safety, stabilisation, and psychoeducation for trauma recovery
- Somatic, cognitive and narrative based trauma interventions
- Understanding specialist approaches to trauma work including EMDR, Trauma Focused CBT, Schema Therapy, and Compassion-Focused Therapy
- Working with trauma in diverse populations and cultural contexts
- Addressing trauma in specific contexts: domestic abuse, sexual abuse, military, GSRD
- Ethical practice, legal frameworks, and professional boundaries in trauma work
Entry Requirements
As this is a post qualifying course, you must be a qualified counsellor/ psychotherapist, and a full member of a PSA-registered professional body (e.g., BACP, NCPS, UKCP, etc.); with at least 1 year of post-qualifying experience since completing your core training (e.g. Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling).
You must have also received a minimum of 40hrs of personal therapy during or after your previous qualifying training as a counsellor.

Students will be assessed through a variety of methods, including:
A reflective case study
A literature review research project

On completion of this course, students are eligible to apply for:
- CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People
- Open University Foundation Degree in Counselling
- CPCAB Level 6 Certificate in Counselling Supervision
- CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People
- Open University Foundation Degree in Counselling
- CPCAB Level 6 Certificate in Counselling Supervision
Additional Course Requirements
In addition to attending the course, students will be required to fulfil the following requirements:
- Facilitate 30hrs of counselling with clients (in private practice or agency role)
- Attend a minimum of 1.5 hours per month of clinical supervision, aligned with your professional body requirements.
