Course Summary
This course is designed to introduce students to active listening in a helping role. Through practice sessions and teaching covering initial counselling skills, learners are equipped with the basic skills to establish a helping relationship with others and to offer a supportive environment within which to utilise such skills. This course will not qualify attendees to be professional counsellors, however, it will provide the essential foundations to begin or further the student's journey towards a career in counselling.

By the end of the course, candidates will have greater awareness, understanding and skills in enabling them to:
- Work within the limitations of the helping role
- Establish boundaries for helping work
- Communicate empathic understanding
- Focus on the speaker’s agenda
- Understand the importance of self-awareness in helping work
- Use listening and responding skills
- Use review and feedback to develop initial counselling skills

Entry Requirements
As this is an introductory course, there are no entry requirements for this course in terms of qualifications or experience.
Students must be aged 16 or over.

Assessment Process
Students are assessed through short written assignment tasks (e.g. a weekly reflective journal) as well as tutor and peer observed active listening skills practice.
Further Training
On completion of this qualification, you are eligible to apply for our CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, which further develops active listening skills and is the next step for those wishing to continue their training, with a view to qualifying as a counsellor.
