Course Summary

This NCPS Accredited and BACP recognised two-year part-time qualification gives learners the knowledge, skills and competencies to work as a therapeutic counsellor in an agency context. This qualification is designed to lead to an employed or voluntary role in a counselling agency in both health care and non-medical settings. Successful completion of this course means you will be able to provide a therapeutic counselling service – initially within the context of an agency’s service framework but later (by completing the CPCAB Level 5 Diploma or its equivalent) students may progress to independent practice.

Our qualifications are nationally recognised and quality assured. Our Level 4 Diploma is accredited by the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS) and recognised by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, conferring eligibility for full individual membership upon qualification.

Topics Covered

By the end of the course, candidates shall have greater awareness, understanding and skills in enabling them to:

- Work ethically, safely and professionally as a counsellor
- Work within a counselling relationship
- Work with client diversity in counselling work
- Work within a user-centred approach to counselling
- Work with self-awareness in the counselling process
- Work within a coherent framework of counselling theory and skills
- Work self-reflectively as a counsellor

Entry Requirements

To be eligible to apply for this course, you must have already completed (or be due to complete) both a Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills and a Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies (or equivalent), these qualifications must equal at least 90 hours of live tutor-led/class based study (online or in person) and have included a skills practice based element.

Assessment Process

Students will be assessed through a variety of methods, including:

- Written work (including essays, reflective journals and case studies)
- Tutor and peer observations of skills practice sessions
- Group presentations
- Reports from clinical supervisors and placement managers

Additional Course Requirements

In addition to attending the course, students will be required to fulfil the following requirements (which are financed by the student):

- Engage with 60hrs of personal therapy with an approved therapist (over the two years)
- Secure a voluntary counselling placement and facilitate 100hrs of counselling
- Engage in clinical supervision once in placement, in line with NCPS or BACP's ethical guidelines
- Hold student membership with either NCPS or BACP for the entire duration of the course

Theoretical Orientation

Our Level 4 Diploma is based in Clarkson's (2003) Five Relationship Model of Integration, which acts as a framework to integrate several approaches to counselling. The main modalities referenced on this course are Person-Centred Therapy, Contemporary Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy and Transactional Analysis.

We train students to become Integrative Counsellors based upon 'Relational Integration', meaning that at the heart of our philosophy and approach is the importance of the relationship between client and therapist; adapting the use of different counselling theories and modalities according to what best serves the therapeutic relationship in a given moment.

Further Training

On completion of the Level 4 Diploma, students will be eligible to apply for the following courses currently delivered at our centre:

- CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling
- CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People
